The Consumer Electronics Patent Scorecard represents companies involved in the manufacture of electronic devices geared toward consumers. This includes audio and video products, gaming systems, watches, speakers and musical instruments.

Consumer Electronics has the sixth highest patenting volume of the seventeen industries tracked by The Patent Board and accounts for 4.6% of all active utility patents issued this past year. It is the second highest industry in terms of average patents per company, indicating that Consumer Electronics companies have a robust patenting approach - not surprising given the volume of patents that go into a high-tech electronic product. The industry increased its patenting by 11% over last year, with Samsung Group and Canon Inc having the largest increase within the top 10 at 45 and 44% respectively. Over half the companies represented are headquartered in Japan with just 22% from the United States. In the top 10, International Game Technology is the only U.S.-based company as well as the only pure-play company. Consumer Electronics has a large contingent of multi-industry companies that overlap most frequently with the Semiconductors and Electronics & Instruments industries.
