The Patent Board Top 20 provides unique insight into national technological performance, including strengths in specific technical areas, the impact of patents on the rest of world, the linkage of national innovation with scientific research, and the speed of innovation. It reviews patents issued to the inventors from 59 countries since 1980 and can be used as a tool to compare the performance of these countries. The Top 20 utilizes three distributions of patents; analyzed data is classified by 1) the US Standard Industrial Classification Product Field (SIC), 2) the International Patent Class (IPC), and 3) The Patent Board's own proprietary set of 30 technology areas.
