According to The Patent Board’s Chemicals Patent Scorecard™ published in The Wall Street Journal, BASF and Dow Chemical bolstered by major acquisitions.

E.I. du Pont de Nemours and Company (DuPont) (Wilmington, Delaware, USA) continues to dominate the Chemicals industry with the highest patent volume and maintains a patent impact above the industry. DuPont’s plant genetics subsidiary Pioneer Hi-Bred International Inc accounts for 29% of DuPont’s current year patenting efforts, without which they would have the second highest patent volume. DuPont also ranks 1st in Science Strength™, which illustrates how highly their patented technology is building upon scientific research. While their plant genetics business contributes the most to this science score, DuPont’s other business units also have significant ties to scientific research. BASF SE (Ludwigshafen, Germany) holds onto its #2 spot, with a 27% increase in patent volume. This increase reflects their April 2009 acquisition of Ciba Specialty Chemicals, who last quarter held a rank of 26th. The combined entity is still almost one hundred points lower than DuPont in Technology Strength™, but gives it a stronger position with a significant lead over the rest of the top 10. The recent April 2009 acquisition of Rohm and Haas (previously ranked 7th) by The Dow Chemical Company (Midland, Michigan, USA) propelled Dow Chemical sixteen spots into 3rd overall. This acquisition nearly doubled their patent volume and increased their Industry Impact™ score 50%. Dow Chemical now has an impact that is over the industry average by 30% which falls in line with their corporate strategy of quality over quantity in their patent portfolio. Their Research Intensity™ is also 30% above the industry; however it decreased significantly, which indicates that Rohm and Haas was not as reliant upon scientific discoveries in their patented technologies as Dow Chemical.
