The latest Aerospace & Defense Patent Scorecard™ was released today and has ranked 44 of the top Aerospace & Defense companies according to the relative strengths of their patent portfolios as measured by Technology Strength™. The Patent Scorecard provides an overall assessment of a company’s recent intellectual property quality and quantity at a broad industry level. The Patent Board tracks seventeen industry scorecards and also creates customized scorecards that provide insight with leading performance indicators for an entire portfolio and its closest competitors, scalable at the technology or business unit level.
The Boeing Company (Chicago, Illinois, USA) continues to dominate the Aerospace & Defense industry. With patents granted up almost 11% for the quarter, and increases in every indicator, Boeing increased its lead over #2 Lockheed Martin Corp. (Bethesda, Maryland, USA) by over 30% in Technology Strength™. Although Lockheed has a Science Strength™ 53% greater than Boeing, it dropped in Technology Strength™ by over 11%, due largely to an 8% decrease in patents granted for the quarter. It still however, leads all companies in the Top 10 in Science Strength™ and Research Intensity™, which is almost double the industry average. General Electric Co. (Fairfield, Connecticut, USA) maintains its #3 ranking but is moving closer to Lockheed with a 37% increase in Technology Strength™. With a 10% increase in patent activity, and an Industry Impact™ that is almost double the industry average, General Electric has Lockheed it its sights and may break into the #2 spot next quarter.
