According to The Patent Board’s Information Technology Patent Scorecard™ published in The Wall Street Journal, smaller companies are beginning to patent more frequently in the IT industry, while open-source software companies rise in rank.
Microsoft (Redmond, Washington, USA) holds its top position on the Information Technology Patent Scorecard™ by a large margin over second-ranked IBM (Armonk, New York, USA). Microsoft and IBM have held the first and second ranks, swapping positions every few months over the last several years. Both companies dominate the industry in terms of patent volume, with over 3,000 patents granted in the past year alone for each company –over twice as many patents as the next largest players. Microsoft’s patent volume remains steady, while IBM even increased its patenting by 19%. IBM also increases its Industry Impact™ by 4%, while Microsoft shows a 3% decrease, but IBM’s impact score still sits about 20% below the industry average, while Microsoft’s impact sits about 20% above the industry average.
