1/4/2010 3:53:19 PM

The latest Consumer Electronics Patent Scorecard™ was released today and has ranked 59 of the top Consumer Electronics companies according to the relative strengths of their patent portfolios as measured by Technology Strength™. The Patent Scorecard™ provides an overall assessment of a company’s recent intellectual property quality and quantity at a broad industry level. The Patent Board tracks seventeen industry scorecards and also creates customized scorecards that provide insight with leading performance indicators for an entire portfolio and its closest competitors, scalable at the technology or business unit level.

Sony Corporation (Tokyo, Japan) maintains the top rank on this week’s Patent Scorecard, showing gains across most indicators. Sony’s Industry Impact™ increases 4%, bringing the score just above the industry average. Sony dominates the Consumer Electronics industry in terms of sheer patent volume, with over 1500 patents granted in the past year alone. The average number of patents granted in the past year to a single company in the Consumer Electronics industry is 130. Sony also leads in Science Strength™, an indicator of a company’s reliance on scientific research in its patenting activity.
