Corning & NGK continue to hold onto top spots
2/2/2010 2:52:13 PM

The latest Industrial Materials Patent Scorecard™ was released today and has ranked 108 of the top Industrial Materials companies according to the relative strengths of their patent portfolios. The Patent Scorecard provides readers with deeper insight into patent portfolios as measurable financial assets and drivers of the market value.  The Technology Strength™ indicator is the basis of the Patent Scorecard rankings and provides an overall assessment of a company’s intellectual property quality and quantity.

Corning Inc. (Corning, New York, USA) and NGK Insulators Ltd. (Nagoya, Japan) continue to hold onto the top two spots again this Scorecard. Corning had an increase in patent count of almost 6% and Science Strength™ of over 9%. With an Industry Impact™ more than double the industry average, it will be difficult for any company to knock them out of the top spot anytime soon. NGK had decreases across all indicators, with an almost 10% decrease in patent count and an over 21% drop in Science Strength™, but was able to hold onto the #2 spot overall.

Moving up another three spots to 3rd after breaking back into the Top 10 last Scorecard, is Guardian Industries Corp. (Auburn Hills, Michigan, USA). Patent growth was up over 32% for the quarter, nearly five times the industry average of 6.8%. Science Strength™ increased 50%, and its Research Intensity™ was up 180%. Guardian also has the lowest Innovation Cycle Time™ of any Top 10 company and with an increase of 59% in overall Technology Strength™, may catch NGK and take over 2nd spot if it can keep up this momentum. Hitachi Ltd. (Tokyo, Japan) remains unchanged at 4th this quarter, even though the company increased its patent count by 16% and Science Strength™ by over 25%.   Hitachi has a below average Industry Impact™, which fell an additional 6.5% for the quarter.
