Roche continues to lead industry, companies in the Biotechnology industry are highly self-reliant
2/8/2010 5:06:13 PM

The latest Biotechnology Patent Scorecard™ was released today and has ranked 65 of the top Biotechnology companies according to the relative strengths of their patent portfolios.  The Patent Scorecard provides readers with deeper insight into patent portfolios as measurable financial assets and drivers of the market value. The Science Strength™ indicator is the basis of the Biotechnology Patent Scorecard™ rankings and provides an overall assessment of a company’s reliance on scientific research. The Patent Board tracks seventeen industry scorecards and also creates customized scorecards that provide insight with leading performance indicators for an entire portfolio and its closest competitors, scalable at the technology or business unit level.

Roche Holdings, Inc. (Basel, Switzerland) leads the Biotechnology industry on this week’s Patent Scorecard with a Science Strength™ that far outpaces the rest of the industry. Scoring over twenty times higher than the industry average and nearly four times higher than the next competitor, Roche maintains a secure lead despite a 34% decrease in the last thirteen weeks alone. Roche’s sharp decline in Science Strength™ indicates that its most recent patenting activity is less reliant on core scientific research than its previous patents.

Biogen Idec, Inc. (Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA) holds on to the second position despite slight declines across all of its indicators. Human Genome Sciences (HGS) (Rockville, Maryland, USA) moves up one spot to rank third, while Geron Corp (Menlo Park, California, USA) moves up two positions to rank fourth. Geron’s influence in the industry shows a dramatic bump, with a 61% increase in Industry Impact™, bringing Geron’s score to be the highest in the industry at over four times the industry average. Although Geron has a large number of internal citations, it is being cited by almost all of its competitors in the Biotechnology industry. Abbott Laboratories cites Geron most frequently, with 19% of Geron’s citations coming from Abbott alone. Additionally, Geron is highly influential on university research, with 30% of its citations coming from academia, most notably the University of Colorado. Maxygen, Inc. (Red Wood City, California, USA) drops three positions, due to a 33% decrease in Science Strength™. Like Roche, Maxygen’s declining score indicates that it is not keeping up with its previous connection to core scientific research.
