DuPont continues to lead industry
2/24/2010 4:38:53 PM

The latest Chemicals Patent Scorecard™ was released today and has ranked 170 of the top Chemicals companies according to the relative strengths of their patent portfolios as measured by Technology Strength™. The Patent Scorecard™ provides an overall assessment of a company’s recent intellectual property quality and quantity at a broad industry level. The Patent Board tracks seventeen industry scorecards and also creates customized scorecards that provide insight with leading performance indicators for an entire portfolio and its closest competitors, scalable at the technology or business unit level.

E.I. du Pont de Nemours and Company (DuPont) (Wilmington, Delaware, USA) maintains the top rank in the Chemicals industry by a significant margin. DuPont’s Technology Strength™ score is twice that of its next competitor and over twenty times larger than the industry average. DuPont also holds the largest number of patents granted in the Chemicals industry, although the gap between DuPont and the rest of the Chemicals companies is not as wide in terms of volume. Second-ranked BASF SE (Ludwigshafen, Germany) and third-ranked The Dow Chemical Company (Midland, Michigan, USA) hold on to their positions on the Patent Scorecard as well. All three companies see consistent improvements in Technology Strength™, while BASF and Dow show significant fluctuations in their Science Strength™. BASF sees an 18% decline in Science Strength as it has not kept the same pace in scientific referencing that it did with previous innovations. Dow, on the other hand, shows a 32% increase in Science Strength™, mostly due to the recent issuance of a few highly science-linked patents. One such patent is US7612009 Process for homo-or copolymerization of conjugated olefins, which cites 58 different works of scientific literature.

Saudi Basic Industries Corporation (SABIC) (Riyadh, Saudi Arabia) moves up one position this week to #4, while Honeywell Intl Inc (Morristown, New Jersey, USA) moves down to #5. Saudi Basic and Honeywell both show increases in patent volume of approximately seven to eight percent and Saudi Basic shows further gains in Science Strength™ of 23%. LyondellBasell Industries (Rotterdam, The Netherlands) and RAG AG (Herne, Germany) both moved up two positions to #6 and #8 and both companies show gains across multiple indicators. The biggest gainer this quarter is RAG, who sees a 21% increase in patents granted, a 93% increase in Science Strength™ and a 35% increase in Technology Strength™. Not only is RAG patenting more, but their patents are more heavily reliant on research and more impactful on the Chemicals industry.
