According to The Patent Board’s Semiconductors Patent Scorecard™ published in The Wall Street Journal, the Semiconductors industry continues to show many promising up-and-comers.

Intel Corp. (Santa Clara, California, USA) maintains the #1 spot on this week’s Semiconductors Patent Scorecard™, a position it has held since 2007. However, patent count decreased by almost 3% and all other indicators remained flat or showed slight decreases from the previous quarter. Intel’s overall Technology Strength™ fell by almost 7%, but #2 ranked SanDisk Corp. (Milpitas, California, USA) fell by almost 12%, allowing Intel to increase its overall lead in the Patent Scorecard™. SanDisk had decreases across almost every indicator, but still maintains an Industry Impact™ almost four times the industry average, and a Research Intensity™ almost twice the industry average.

Micron Technology Inc. (Boise, Idaho, USA) and Samsung Group (Seoul, South Korea) both move up one spot to 3rd and 4th respectively. Micron also had decreases for the quarter in almost every indicator, but has a Science Strength™ over three times its nearest competitor. Samsung had patent growth of 2.4% for the quarter, double the industry average of 1.2%. It also increased its Science Strength™ by 7%, and has the fastest Innovation Cycle Time™ of any Top 10 company.
