Roche and Biogen maintain industry lead, Amgen moves into 3rd and two new companies join the Top 10

The latest Biotechnology Patent Scorecard™ was released today and has ranked 68 of the top Biotechnology companies according to the relative strengths of their patent portfolios.  The Patent Scorecard™ provides readers with deeper insight into patent portfolios as measurable financial assets and drivers of the market value. The Science Strength™ indicator is the basis of the Biotechnology Patent Scorecard™ rankings and provides an overall assessment of a company’s reliance on scientific research.  The Patent Board tracks seventeen industry scorecards and also creates customized scorecards that provide insight with leading performance indicators for an entire portfolio and its closest competitors, scalable at the technology or business unit level.


New England BioLabs (Ipswich, Massachusetts, USA) moved up seven spots to 41st and ARCA Biopharma Inc. (Broomfield, Colorado, USA) moved up eight spots to 52ndNE BioLabs produces products and regent supplies for the life sciences industry. It had a 300% gain in patent count and a 199% increase in Science Strength™, and was recently granted a patent for methods and compositions relating to gene silencing. ARCA works on genetically targeted therapies for heart failure and other cardiovascular diseases, and was recently awarded it first two patents in the past year, one of which is for stem cell factor-like proteins and uses thereof.
